Technology Awareness in this digital era
6 februari 2020 van 5:30 pm tot 7:00 pm
This topic will be covered by two interesting presentations:
1. Role of materiality in the digital era By Clara Le Meur
Online users’ behavior produces a constant stream of valuable data, sold for advertising purposes, or used in order to train artificial intelligence and develop new services. Users are often unaware of the value they generate, because they cannot relate to this digital phenomena with their senses.
Clara le Meur’s graduation project ‘Valuable Gesture Factory’ is a physical translation of the digital economy hidden behind our screens, transforming users’ data or ‘dataomes’ into precious weaves. During her talk, Clara will unfold her research on the impacts of digital transformation on the relationship between users and artefacts, going through the historical links between the textile industry and the first computing technology to finally expose the vision she developed for her project ‘Valuable Gesture Factory.
What are the limits of digital interfaces? Can we reconsider the role of materiality in an era where a lot of artifacts are becoming light and numbers?
About Clara Le Meur
Clara Le Meur is a French designer based between Eindhoven and Paris, recently graduated with Cum Laude from the Design Academy Eindhoven. Her interests lie in the exploration and questioning of the phenomena of interaction between users and artifacts, the tangible and the immaterial, the visible and the hidden, the past and the future. Research is an important part of her process, hereafter translating her ideas within objects, materials, machines and installations, combining mediums and technologies of various times and places.
Clara is expert on Design/product Research – Concept and material development.
2. Machine Learning & Design by Vera van der Burg
How can a designer use Artificial Intelligence in her creative process? How can a Machine Learning algorithm help to obtain new insights, introduce new techniques, or benefit to the creative process? For her graduation project at the Design Academy Eindhoven, Vera researched how she could integrate or use an AI in her own design process. Being a former neuroscientist, Vera’s main field of interest were object recognition algorithms and computer vision, and how these systems are being trained and used. In this talk, Vera will present her research and process, and how it all resulted in the art installation ‘Still Life’, presented during Dutch Design Week 2019.
About Vera van der Burg
Schooled as a neuroscientist and with a MA in design, Vera van der Burg works on the intersection of art, design and theoretical research. She explores Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, from both a philosophical and practical level, in order to introduce new perspectives to the professional field and the bigger public.
Vera is an expert on Design, Artificial Intelligence & Neuroscience
